Welcome Message from Congress President:

On the occasion of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Bahrain Diabetes Society, in the name of Allah the most gracious most merciful, I would like to welcome all of you to celebrate this occasion which will have a lot of impact on the health of our society. Diabetes mellitus is highly prevalent disease in the Kingdom of Bahrain. According to National Non-communicable Diseases Risk Factors Survey 2007, carried by Ministry of Health - Kingdom of Bahrain 2007, hyperglycaemia was increasing with age from 2.4% in the age of 20-29 years to 30.6% among those of 60-64 years of age. This high prevalence of diabetes mellitus has its implications on all levels; it affects the patients and their families as well as the establishments, because of absenteeism from work and low production, and will affect the health and economy of the society.

The overall expenditures of the health care system are spent on complications resulting from diabetes: heart attacks, kidney failure, amputation and blindness. On the other hand a number of studies have demonstrated that targeted prevention and treatment programs can reduce the risk of contracting diabetes as well as related complications to a relevant degree. Due to the negative impact of the disease on the quality of life for patients and also on the socioeconomic situation, Type 1&2 diabetes and their complications are major public health concern.

Bahrain Diabetes Society was established on 1989 and since then it is devoted to improve diabetes care and prevention in Bahrain by partnership with stakeholders, governmental and non-governmental organization (NGOs)

Bahrain Diabetes Society's main mission is to provide diabetes awareness, education and counselling to people with diabetes, their family members and the public and to control the diabetes and its complications.
